Woo i'm the first to post. HAHA Frank. So Globalization is escribes an ongoing process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a globe-spanning network of communication and trade according to dictionary.com. What that means is we can communicate with anyone at anytime, anywhere. People use this for a bunch of reason like the ones above, political conquest, trade, or cultural diversity. This can be both good and bad. Its Good because we learn for as a world and can develop economically socially and culturally with other nations. This can lead to alliances growth and wealth. Its bad because you are now reliant on someone else. We saw the effects of this in the world wars, also you loss you sense of identity and belonging in the world. Worst of all you have to spend time with kids from foreign countries with silly accents(Ross).
Totally forgot about the modern tech, anyways transportation like railways, steam ships, and airplanes made the world a smaller place in the 20Th center y which made it easier for globalization to take place. Also inventions like the telegraph and Morse coded lead to communication and better relations every. film made it easier to document events and capture the true of reality of the humane spirt.
Globalization... pretty much, it is the world interacting with eachother in all sorts of ways. Mixing cultures and societies, and bringing new and improved crops, materials, and knowledge. Modern technology made it easier for globalization to take place, as Garrett said above. With planes, ships, cars, and trains, it does not take months for the other side of the world to get new food sources or new technology to help the war effort.
Some of it's advantages would include, as I said above, the fact that technology could be spread faster, and groups of countries could advance together and keep eachother in balance while also moving forward and helping the less fortunate countries. This could also be a bad effect. If one group such as the allies became overproductive and gained more power they could start with imperialism and might end up taking the world. If that is there plan then spies could steal information and take it to enemy countries and they in turn could begin taking over the world with their own allies. There must be some kind of balance.
As the textbook stated "Globalization means increased tourism, the creation of more world music, as well as new dimensions of international economic invention". Basically, it is thought that the world coming together is a good thing but can also require a lot of work from different groups of people. Pessimists argue that America and the English language will overpower all other cultures, while optimists say that all those little cultures will flourish under globalization.
@ Garrett
Good points about the fact that reliance on others can be fatal during war. Sense of identity is also a big thing in many European countries so this problem might have resulted in many outbreaks.
One thing I have to say is that with globalization large countries aren't completely reliant on other countries. They can produce everything they need and more so they trade the extra's with other countries. Reliance on others may occur in wars but not on a regular bases.
Globalization is the unification of the world economically, culturally, and, to some extent, politically. Essentially, all of the nations of the world, regardless of geographical location, begin to interact with increasing regularity and frequency. Modern technology is arguable the largest cause of globalization. Better engines result in faster transportation, so people and objects can move from one region to the next with greater efficiency. Advancements in communication allow ideas to flow more freely around the world, and political and business leaders to interact with far greater speed. Communication and transportation are the two main categories when discussing globalization.
The dangers of globalization are the loss of native cultures and languages as stronger countries, often the Western world, assert their cultural authority over other regions. The text also mentions the possibility of illegal trade and trafficking, both of which increase as a direct result of globalization. Humanitarians also argue that globalization leads to a greater disparity between the rich and the poor, this time on a global scale. However, it is important to remember that with these increased problems, globalization help us develop new solutions as well.
@Garrett: I like many of your points, however, I disagree that relying on another country is bad. True, that means that, in some way, that country exerts an influence on you, whether it be economical by means of trade or cultural through a hierarchical diffusion. Despite this, I believe that interdependence of nations, which in our world is already far too prevalent to do away with, leads to a greater sense of unity and helps prevent wars. The war in Iraq is, in my opinion, a very small-scale struggle, especially in light of the World Wars, which we are currently discussing. Since these two great conflicts, the reliance of nations, even nations such as China and the US that disagree on fundamental governmental policies, has helped prevent open conflict. In other words, it is in no industrialized country's best interest to go to war with another first-world country, because they would damage part of their own country in the process. This is, in my opinion, one of the best advantages of globalization.
Globalization is when multiple nations from long distances are able to be connected through long distances, There are definate advantages to it like being able to trade better and get supplies that certain conuntires normally wouldn't, or have better communitcations/relations with other countires. One of the big downfalls of it is that if one country starts to have issues (mostly economic) other countries will feel the blow of those issues. LIke The great depression for example.

Globalization is pretty much the whole world coming together. Scientifically, socially, technologically and economically. Our world today is so connected that if something happens in one country nearly every single other country is affected as well. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. It can be a good thing in the sense that people are able to communicate ideas and work together to better our world. On the bad side, one countries economic downfall can lead to other countries downfall as well. Much like the Global Depression that affected Europe after World War I. These issues become more prominent as new technologies have arisen because it is so much easier for the world to communicate with eachother.
Nice grammar Garrett...describes is spelled "escribes"? Really...Tcha
Globalization is the integration of the world economy into one functioning unit of trade. Various countries supply resources to other countries in exchange for resources that that countries cannot produce efficiently. It's like harnessing the comparative advantage of every country so that the maximum amount of efficiency is reached. The dangers of globalization is in that a economic crisis in one country could translate into economic crisis for various other countries. Also, in case of war if a country imports all its raw materials because of globalization then it won't have enought say ore for steel production, and will lose the war. However, advantages include cheaper labor in third world countries, and larger economic growth for the poorer countries.

I apologize for the double post, as it seems the server lags.
Responding to your second post what exactly do you mean by planes, phones...etc. Make the world a smaller place? It hasn't come to my attention that you can terraform the earth with a cellphone yet. I disagree that films help globalization. Films are usually marketed to a local audience, and only films that are either tremendously popular or horrid are sent overseas. "Capturing the essence of the 'humane' spirit" has nothing to do with the cold hard reality of the film companies trying to squeeze money out of third world countries. Yes, it's globalization, but its on a very small scale.
@Alicia: I agree with many of your points. Your idea about economic downfall effecting other countries was very original. Not only did this occur after World War I, but we can see it in the world right now, albeit to a lesser extent. China is not very happy with the U.S. for essentially causing this worldwide recession, and their communist government has helped dampen the effect on their economy to some degree. You mentioned the sharing of ideas as one positive effect. I think it is important to note some other advantages are the trade opportunities and the distribution of raw materials. Oil is a great example of this, but that again leads into one of the downsides, which is the influence certain countries have over others.
Globalization is basically the world coming together is various ways, such as economically and politically. Modern technology has contributed extremely to globalization, because once communicating with other countries became readily available. The first type was telegrams, and after this everything became much easier. Being able to communicate made trade a lot easier. And being able to trade with the whole world helps all of the economies greatly. Dangerous side effects could be war.
Alicia,
I think that you brought up many good points in your response. I had not thought of how it would effect the world scientifically, so thanks for reminding me of that! Also you saying that all of the countries in the world are connected now is a very true statement. By people being able to share ideas it can help our world progress very fast. And the negative thing you brought up was good as well.. because it was the same as mine! Wars and depressions are a direct casue of globalization! Nice Work!
What we refer to as globalization can be narrowed down to the connection and interaction between nations amongst the world. Globalization first arises around the first world war, when alliances formed, trade was a greater progression, and communicaion/ travel takes place. I would define globalization as the begining interest and dependence countries start to exhibit upon eachother.
Globalization began through the awareness among countries, toward their neighbors. On the good side, this enabled them to learn from eachother, and created friendly competion that bettered our technology such as the USSR. Overall trade is a great factor, increasing wealth in smaller countries and the variety of goods. Between the alliances and aid these nations began to enable, not everything worked out to their advantage. for some countries, globalization created dependency that when one nation had economic lose, it effected all the nations, being that they rely on eachother. Also countries can influence others, and not always rub off a good effect.
Today, globalization is endorsed through transportation, communication, and developing technology. Also when countries help eachother out and expand on lending a hand and understanding to their neighbors. For instance Haiti and Hurricane Katrina. The WORLD WIDE WEB is a great example of communication that links countries, and travel. We are all connected on this earth, and have realtions that effect eachother whether good or bad.
sorry that was me :)) i submitted it before i added my name!
I think globalization is like getting most countries connected some how now we have phones and internet. Back before that they had to write letters and a big part of then is treaties and helping other countries out by buying the other countries goods, they did that so it would be good on both economies but like josh said if something happened to one of the countries the other would suffer a major loss too.
Garret,
I agree with you in many ways, and like that you said globalization makes us a smaller world, because i believe it does. Of course we are always expanding and changing, yet our awareness of eachother has linked us together more and defined us more as nations. We are no longer apart of a strange, new world filled with mystery and undetermined routes, but a linked, sustained universe.Globalizzation will never cease to exist, becasue we will never stop learning, giving and taking from eachother. Together we are simply integrating through our economies, societies, and cultures, as you said.
josh
it seems that we have alot of similarities between ours. you made a good point that alicia made to was that about all the ways we are connected
Globalization of the world is a coming together of the world powers. Technologcal advances such as phones and email have made globalization much easier and faster. Also, jet planes and faster ships have incresed globalization with making trade easier and faster. The dangerous side effects of globalization are the dependence we now have on other countries. If China were to completely close its borders, many countries would not have half of the items they have now.
Globalization, as I see it, is when all of the world sort of ties around itself. If one thing happens in one country everyone else feels the effect, either good or bad. However, not everyone sees it as that. Some just believe that it is when the governments from most countries come together to talk about doing things together that will, probably, never happen. Or some think that it is when the world shares it's discoveries, technology, or goods with others. It is an open debate on what the true defenition really is.
Responding to Angel, globalization is more than the explosion of communication technologies, it is the total integration of the world economy. People in one region stop producing one thing, and decide to get it from another. People take advantage of capital and markets around the world.
Globalization is pretty much the world coming together. In various ways such as technology, economically and politically. This majorly began around the time of the first world war. Alliances were made, through better communication and travel. Also after World War I when countries became economically dependent on each other causing the Great Depression.
Since then techonolgy has gotten much much better, such as phones, emails, tvs, and texting. Word spreads very quickly to all parts of the world.
This is good and bad, it sort of led to the Great Depression and partly the wars. This is good though because we keep more connected.
Bailee,
The definition that you gave the word globalization fits it very well. The world coming together is a key part of what makes the world function. You brought up when globalization happened most, and I think that is very good! Also you bringing up the depression was very good! I did not mention how globalization effects us now, so its good you did! We can communicate very easily now! I liked everything that you said!
Basically, globalization is when different parts if the world come together as one. Typically in ways of politics, the economy and technology. Globalization has become a major thing in todays world especially thanks to technology. Technology such as cell phones and websites, like facebook, allow people all over the world to communicate. Since new ways of transportation and communication arrived around the dates of WWI, globalization has never been the same. Some advantages of globalization would be a better relationship with countries all around the world. Disadvantages may be that just like in WWI "teams" could occur over simple arguments.
Globalization is the process by which the world becomes unified culturally and politically. As countries trade and interact, ideas and culture are spread. New transportation and communication technologies have facilitated this modern globalization. Globalization allows for a more unified, 'smaller' world. Goods and ideas move quickly.
Some argue that globalization is negative in that it results in a loss of cultural identity. However, it does just the opposite; it creates a world community of sorts, allowing the entire world to share in a similar culture.
@Tommy: I agree completely. Interdependence between countries strengthens the bonds between them and deters conflict. It promotes a sense of unity between countries through reliance on each other.
Globalization is a "process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nation". This process is driven by international trade and investment and technology. Technology has contributed to globalization because it has allowed people to transport from 1 place to another faster than ever before (airplanes and cars). Better engines also have to do with not necessarily if people get to another place, but more so with how quickly they are able to get to another place. Landlines, e mail, cell phones, etc are all examples of technology that allow people to communicate fast. Therefore, the ideas are communicated much more freely and quickly and so the countries of the world share ideas and these ideas alter the culture of each country. Some people feel that Globalization is one of the best things that happened to the world; however so some people believe that globalization may lead to countries loosing their personal identities. Some advantages of globalism are: globalization provides communication networks that allow small niche cultures, languages, and organizations to flourish" (Spodek 635). More advantages aside from those provided in the text book are: increased free trade between nations, the world is tied together because of mass media, and it increases environmental protection in developed countries. Some of its dangerous side effects include that "the world's cultures may be homogenized into a single culture and undercut many languages with a single dominant global language (English)" (Spodek 635). Additional side effects are increases in chance of civil war within developing countries, increased likely good of economic disruptions in one nation effecting all nations, etc.
Responding to Tommy Bello Pd. 4..
I completely agree with what you have said. All nations of the world begin to interact with one another and begin to trade ideas a lot more frequently than they did before. Also, I like how you brought up some additional disadvantages that I didn't even think of. You said that globalization may mean illegal trade and illegal trafficking. I didn't realize this at first but now that the world is so in touch, countries will be able to trade illegally with a lot more ease. I also linked how you brought social class conflict into it and said that the gap between the rich and the poor will increase. Another thing to think about is that globalization increases the chance of civil war between developing countries as they both vie for resources. I mentioned this in my initial comment as well.
Responding to Mackenzie Scott...
I agree with your comment. I like how you brought up websites like facebook because this may be even a more valid reason than say Email. With the click of a button, you can be chatting with someone sitting in Indonesia or China and at the same time with another click of a button you can be chatting with someone in Australia or Greenland. Although I doubt that high end corporations use it for communication of ideas etc, in the future with the way people are getting hooked onto facebook, it is inevitable that within the next ten years facebook would be the leading force in communication leading to globalization. I agree with you that the downside of globalization could be "teams" with countries against other countries. The teams would most probably be within the poorer countries because they are most likely to have a civil war over fighting for resources.
Globalization is all the counries of the world come together. Technology like the compuers, telephones, and most importantly planes and cars have contributed to globalization. They allow people to connect with eachother and easily travel throughout the world. As the world came up with new engines and the automobile, it allowed people to socialize even more. Globalization can be either good or bad. It allows people to comunicate very quickly and to travel to places on their vacation time or for work. On the other hand if one country were to fail then it is certain that at least a few others will too. It also causes nations to loose their identities. Globalization also increases trade and so if the economy of a country were to fall then the trade of that country would probably decrease too. And so it would affect everyone.
@Mariha,
I agree with you about the English language. It will overpower other nations everywhere. It is already a core class in schools in Europe so that children and teens everywhere speak English. This might be good because then everyone will speak a universal language. But in my opinion it is ruining other countries. They are loosing their languages and so English should not be mandatory. There are even English universities in Europe, if someone wants to go to an English university then they should go to America or England.
Globalization is the interaction of humans on a global level. Technologies such as the telegraph for communication, along with the steamboat and train for transportation and trade, have contributed to this. The advantages include taking advantage of the resources another country has, such as China and silk. However, one problem that may arise is dependency. A country may start to rely on the goods of another, which may not be present in a military conflict or with changing economic conditions.
@ Ajay
Globalization is responsible for a surge in the trade between the various countries of the world. The quick transportation and communication technology is used to achieve this goal.
The culture of numerous societies is greatly altered by globalization. At a point, Japan shut its borders from outsiders for this reason. It is a form of cultural hegemony, as a passive influence is the cause of this change. However, if imperialism is present, indigenous cultures may be destroyed by the ruling empire.
Elan,
You mainly talk about technology from the past. Globalization did not only happen in the past it is a huge part of our world today! Other than that i totally agree with you.
@Aaryn
I completely agree with your views of globalization. Especially when you say that communication has a large influence on it. Also when you say that the downside of globalization is war. I agree with that statement, like I explained in mine it could cause "teams" of some sort, which in term could cause more issues.
Thanks for your response Kalina..
I just wanted to add on the same topic, this joke that I heard.
What is a person called when they speak 3 languages... trilingual
What is a person called when they speak 2 languages... bilingual
What is a person called when they speak 1 language.. American..
Now this is not meant to be in any way mean to Americans its just proving that many other people have to learn two or three languages when they start school.. My french teacher told me that what we are learning now in 3-4 is how far french students were in english by grade two. We as Americans are very privileged, but it does not really seem fair that we learn one while european and other students have the opportunity to learn 3
@Priya: I agree completely. Inventions like the internet, email, and telephones have greatly improved communications, while engines and airplanes have improved transportation. These technologies have caused rapid globalization.
Globalization is simply the unification of different people. It can extend from cultural sharing to economic ties, and modern technology definitely is a huge factor that contributes to it. With the invention of faster and more efficient transportation, the book says that tourism increased, therefore promoting the sharing of other cultures. Advances in communication also speed globalization along through the promotion of "long distance relationships" with people from other countries.
However, plenty of drawbacks occur through globalization. The book mentions illegal trafficking, which is a pretty big problem. But I think the biggest is a loss of national identity. Once peoples begin to mix, both cultures mingle together and they both become hazy and undefined.
And that's all I have to say about that.
Kalina and Elan-
Oh, yeah, it makes sense that dependency would be kind of an issue. While I don't think that it is all bad, I do see where that would cause some problems, especially in times of war or economic depression. Good thought!
“Globalization” can be defined as nations being brought together through technologies, markets, etc. Modern technology has been largely responsible for globalization throughout the last century. For instance, communication through telephones, computers, internet, in addition to several other methods has enabled the entire globe to effectively communicate ideas as well as beliefs with each other. While the benefits of globalization include free trade, efficient communication, and increased tourism, there do exist several drawbacks (Spodek 634). For example, as the world economies proved to be tightly linked, they greatly affect each other; this can be observed during the Great Depression after WWI. Additionally, languages as well as cultures may be destroyed/altered as developed countries force their ideals onto developing nations (Spodek 635). Therefore, globalization is capable of being both beneficial in addition to possibly being detrimental.
Ajay, I completely agree with the first portion of your response as you stated that ideas and cultures are spread through transportation as well as through communication. This can in fact prove to be very beneficial as these beliefs and goods are capable of moving quickly from nation to nation. Additionally, you mentioned that, as a result of globalization, the entire world adopts a similar culture; however, you identified this as being positive, whereas I would have to disagree (sorry). I would classify the loss of cultural identity as being a negative factor as what makes nations fascinating is learning about and respecting their diverse ways of life; not forcing our developed culture upon them to alter their own unique traditions (sorry for disagreeing). Otherwise, I do agree with your previous statements and believe that your definition of “globalization” is extremely accurate.
Lauren,
You are very correct in stateing that globalization is not benefical to some countries, as ideals can be forced upon nations, changing their individualtiy and so forth. Although globalization links us together it does spread us farther apart, as we eventually want to expand independently on our own, evading the compettions between nations, disagreements and dependency. AS you mentioned, diversity is something to look forward to, and when exposed to other nations and their ideals, everyone else tends to adopt eachothers ideals as well. This is not necesarily a bad thing as we are "sharing" , yet it is not totally positive thing either.
Hadley, I definitely agree with your first response as you stated that modern technology is a major factor in globalization; in fact, it is the key factor. Additionally, you mentioned that illegal trafficking results from this which is completely accurate; thank you for pointing this out as I forgot to bring this up earlier. Finally, the negative results of globalization mainly include a loss of cultural identity as the more technologically developed countries repeatedly attempt to force their culture onto other countries in addition to economic mishaps.
In short, Globalization is basically when something is intergrated together on a global scale. Hence the term "Global"ization. Modern technology has had a great impact on globalization through primarily two methods: transportation and communication. Inventions such as the railroad helped long distances be conquered efficiently and the telegraph let messages be spread very rapidly. These both fueled globalization because they increased the conviencence of interacting with others around the globe. Its advantages are things such as better trade and this in turn led to a better a economy and newer technological advances. The problem with globalization is that you are putting yourself out there economically when you engage with other countries and things will not always be successful.
@ Lauren
I agree with everything that you are saying. Your defenition is quite accurate and it is true that communication is the key to globalization. I also agree with your positives and negatives. WWI is a perfect example of how globalization turned for the worse for most countries and economies around the globe were devestated. Very good points! I cannot find a single thing that is even the slightest bit disagreeable!
Globalization can really be said as Earthanization:D It is basically the coming together of the Earth, the bringing together of technology, markets, and nations, which ultimately brings people in the world together. With modern technology, globalization can happen on a faster pace, either positive or negative. On the bright side, the technology we have makes the world such a small place. Methods of quick communication across the world was made possible with the creation of Internet (1969) and the World Wide Web (1989). With the click on a button, an email can be sent to the other side of Earth. We are able to buy a place ticket and actually travel to the other side of Earth. However, there is a down side of globalization. The book mentions criminal association that has spread along with globalization. Also, a nation's identity may be lost because of all the culture mixing and intermingling.
Clint,
I really like your globalization definition! It's very true technology, such as the railroad, brings messages across faster and more efficiently. It also makes trade better and, thus, boosting the economy. I don't quite get what you're saying with the downside of globalization is that you're taking risks because isn't there alway a risk or two when it comes to money? But, overall, I agree with what you said!
Clint,
I really like how you pointed out how the trade helped the economy, most people have just pointed out how it led the the great depression but it also had helped the economy and technology!
@Tommy,
you can't hackle me at school about how you got me on the blog and then agree with me for the most part on the blog. Any way what i was saying about relying on others i meant that in a war time crisis between major powers will be bad because you can no longer access that country.
Globalization is the coming together of nations through many different ways. Technology helps speed the process of globalization along through transportation and communication. Both make it easier for people to communicate. When people from different places communicate, they trade ideas and globalization happens. Mostly good things are born from globalization, better trade and economies are a few of those. But, as others have said, languages and cultures in general can be lost because of this process.
While Globalization is influence by technology i don't think thats the main component. I believe that it is that attitudes of the individual country and their respective people that truly illustrate globalization. Their choices and action in accordance to other countries is the true meaning of globalization.
Frank really, you insult my grammar than send two of the same blogs.
Cindy,
You would make up a word like Earthanization! Other than that, everything you said is true. Globalization can lead to positive and negative effects. As you said, technology did make the process much faster and easier and without it, the world would not be in the state it is today.
Globalization is the eventual connection of individual nations in a world economic and political system, regardless of physical distance separating them. This is made possible by modern technologies developed in the 19th and 20th centuries. The invention of long-distance communication, first with the telegraph and later with the telephone, shortens the distance between countries as their leaders can be talking in a matter of seconds. This immediate sharing of ideas and plans over long distances and national boundaries drives globalization. With this correspondence comes great benefit, but also potential danger. It allows humans to use all of the world and its resources, especially raw materials and people, instead of simply drawing from the immediate surroundings. The economies of opposing nations compete, creating driven workers in each place and, eventually, the best possible product for the given situation. Resources, governmental ideas, and culture are shared from one side of the world to the other and countries are able to take what they consider the best aspects of each culture, economy and government in order to grow as they see fit. This interconnectedness also leads to dangerous alliances and dependences. We see this in the culmination of World War I where one minor conflict between two countries starts to involve more and more until every major player has a stake in it. This kind of conflict isn't able to develop in the absence of globalization.
Victoria,
I completely agree with your definition of globalization and the role that technology plays in creating it. Speed is really the deciding factor in everything concerning globalization. As soon as things like communication with other countries can be accomplished faster and with less effort, global correspondence and collaboration is possible. The trading of ideas is also a vital component of this, as you mentioned. We seem to be forgetting that common people are also able to travel to these distant places and infuse their culture and language into the place they are visiting or bring the other culture back. It is not just legislators and economic giants that have an impact on globalization. As travel becomes easier and faster, along with the increase in speed of communication, the citizens of any given nation migrate more, thus adding to global cultural diffusion, a key part of globalization. Fantastic post.
Basically, globalization is having everyone inter-graded with each other, instead of leaving one nation higher than the other. Well I believe that was the intentions of it because if everyone was globalized, then it would be easier to keep everyone on the same level in trade, technology, and economic productivity. It did not work this way because this forces all countries to rely on each other and in times of need, this could become a heavy burden on another country. But the benefits of being globalized also have there "ups" because now trade is able to expand over larger areas adding to the gross of that countries economy. Then the addition of computers, wired money, and other communication feats. Allows the contact between a neighboring country or an "across the sea" country easily accessible.
.. But back to the "burdens" of globalization. If globalization had not occurred then Austria would have surely taken Serbia. But instead globalization cause countries that were in alliance with each other to step in. Thus making globalization a bad thing when it comes to conquering another country or trying to cut your ties off with another country. Dont get me wrong, if your being attacked this comes in handy because you know you'll have constant supply of things coming in from allies. This had a large effect on Germany because they were the largest of their allies, so if they hit rock bottom then surely their allies will as well. Thus granting the French, British, and Americans the win in WW1.
Cindy -
I completely forgot about the internet (how ironic)! Of course, the invention of the World Wide Web would indeed be key in linking the entire world together, I completely agree with you. Great job!
@ Cindy
While your statements about criminal organization are correct, for the globalization of the world will allow for operations abroad to have quick access to valuable knowledge necessary for their function, your statements about culture are less accurate. Culture is mixed. and often cultures will maintain their own distinguishing features and incorporate what they like from others. But even without globalization, cultures are destroyed through war and, to a lesser extent, trade and cultural hegemony that existed pre-globalization. Culture is not so much affected by globalization.
Globalization is the intergration of different countries econimically, socially, or culturally. Modern technology is really a main factor in globalization, things like the computer or telephone makes it easier for someone to collaborate with someone whether they are on the other side of the country, or on the other side of the world. Today ideas can move around the world fast, definetely making the world a smaller place to live in. Though technology can be used for good it can also be used for evil, but technology isn't good or evil unless we use them for good or evil, like when terroists use it to hurt innocent civilians thats evil, today it has gotten to the point where basically terrorists and technology are married together and was supposed to be used for good is now being used for mostly evil ex.the internet.
Globalization is the interconnection of the nations of the world through the use of technological means. Modern technology has enabled said globalization because tools such as the internet and cell phones allow information to be spread at a pace that is almost instantaneous. Furthermore, this technology has allowed this communication to become more convenient, as most cellphones are fairly small and have internet access. Conversely, if you aren't the cellphone type, there are now extremely portable and versatile computers that are available on the commercial market that provide internet access through a wireless company or WiFi network. Some of these dangerous side effects are the same as the "pros" of globalization. Whilst the internet is a great tool, if it is hacked, valuable information can become public, and the security of various nations and populations is now at risk. Also, all sorts of miscommunication can occur because of these new tools, this bad communication can have all sorts of negative repercussions. The textbook discusses how quickly Europe communicated during the crisis before WWI, if Europe wasn't so interconnected, or "globalized," WWi may have started at a later date due to the fact that information would not go back and forth as quickly. However, the question must be raised: if this technology hadn't been invented, how would history have been altered?
@ Hadley-
How could the loss of national identity be detrimental? What bad could come of a sort of unified culture for all of mankind? Couldn't this unified culture actually some sort of peace, as it would establish rule based upon the beliefs and lifestyle of everyone, therefore being a more universal government. If that were to happen, surely things could become more orderly. What's wrong with that? Just food for thought. And just for the record, I agree with you. All nations should have their own identities and cultures. I'm just playing devil's advocate.
Globalization is the connection and interactions between nations. I believe it all comes down to trade. When nations trade with eachother new ideas are shared and they start using those ideas and depending on eachother. Technology is another huge factor and technology continues to be a huge factor. For example, the internet connects us to people all around the world. Phones, planes, cars, anything! So many things today are expanding and strengthening globalization. This can be good because we are learning new ideas and we can receive things from other countries that our country may not be able to provide. However, when there is this connection and dependency something can set it off. This is shown after World War I with the Great Depression. When one country struggles, the others follow and countries start to abandon eachother, so they can support themselves. Then globalization can be broken.
Garrett, I understand your point about alliances and World War I. However, I do not think it is bad to rely on someone else and to have an ally. We do not have to completely depend upon them, but it is good to trade and share ideas. We would not be as far as we are today if we did not have those connections.
Globalization is the communication or overall interaction of people internationally. As stated in the book, globalization increase tourism, music creation and economic investment. Technology of globalization consists of internet, (like facebook, myspace, Twitter or other communication sites) satelite and cellular communication. Since globalization help communication it created alliances during the World War. But this creation of alliances isn't necissarily a good thing because it has its good and bad affects. The alliance can be stong and/or dangerous as sean stated.
But some believe that globalization leads to the loss of cultural identity. I believe it doesn't, that it only lets the world share culture and other things such as religion and ethnicity.
Rick, i completely agree with your statement of, "what if" China closed their borders to countries. It reminds me of when the United States closed its borders to Japan causing multiple conflicts. If China did so, your right, we wouldn't have many of the items that we have today, and it does have a dangerous affect on globalization and the dependency on some countries that rely on goods of other countries.
Good Job :D

Globalization is the world becoming connected and dependent on each other. Small amounts of globalization are very dangerous, as seen in WW1. The loyalties to some countries lead to the chain reaction of war. Now, with every part of the world dependent on the other, much of the danger is gone. But it does make things very difficult. Now smaller countries can no longer be the big fish in a small pond; all countries must answer to the world super powers in some fashion, whether it be culturally, economically or militarily. Over all though, globalization makes things safer and better.
It is very inaccurate to describe the world economy as one unit of trade. Trade is a massive network of allied, opposing, dependant or indifferent economic forces of all shapes and sizes, from individual investors to countries and global corporate conglomerates.
Globalization is the interaction and connection of nations around the world. It is mainly driven by technology, as it makes connecting so simple. Advances in transportation (automobiles, trains, and planes) along with the Internet and telephones have helped to connect the people in the world. These changes not only affect our lives, but those of people many years ago. For example, WWI was able to begin quickly because of the transportation of soldiers by train and the quick communication between countries. Some obvious advantages are gaining new technologies, ideas, and traditions through this communitcation. However, a country's identity can be lost through globalization as well.
@ Cindy-
I completely agree with your definition of globalization. You made a point about speed that I especially agree with. Speed is really the key to all of this. The speed that is availiable through globalization is what makes the connections so special. Without this speed people would not be able to connect as quickly or share nearly as much.
Josh,
You stated how if the economy of one counrty were to fall then other economies would fall too. This is completely true. The Great Depression was the perfect example seeing as how the entire world was in economic depresstion. People had to use newspapers for insolation and even put cereal boxes on their walls. This depression just shows how one economic downfall can have a domino effect on other economies. This all contributes to poor living conditions of the people and to job scarceties.
Sorry I forgot to put the period on the last one. And WOW! it posted at 11:11. How cool is that?!
Clint, I like how you broke down globalization to two things-transportation and communication. Globalization is growing because of new technology in both of those areas. Trains, cars, and planes have made getting anywhere quite simple. Also, with new communication technology we can talk to basically anyone with just a touch of a button. These advances have played major roles in globalization.
What i'm trying to say about globalization is their is both a good and bad point of depending on other countries. And leaders of those countries must decided if losing personal identity and relying on others is worth the wealth and protection the provide. One case where america didn't think it was worth it was the league of nations, and we were probably right because they failed at their job.
@ Hadley
I completely agree with everything you are saying and you make some very interesting examples. I definitely agree when you mention communication and transportation as being the two factors that helped globalization. Also globalization did indeed aid the convenience of countries interacting with one another and it also helped cultures spread. A point that you made about how it also decreases national identity is also something I overlooked and very true to the point. I agree that as a nation starts interacting with others those countries start to have some influence on them and their identities are slowly but steadily intermingling and not as prominent as they once were. A good example is Japan and the Samurai. Japan’s roots lied in the Samurai but soon they gave way to western influence and ditched their previous methods of warfare.
That is a good joke Mariha!
I see that no one has mentioned the book, The World is Flat by Thomas Freidman. The book disusses globalization and how we are basically tied to each other. There was a story of a reporter doing a piece on outsourcing and was able to hire a man in India to take of his personal business. This man in India sent letters, paid bills, read bedtime stories to the reporter's children. We would not even be thinking of such a thing without globalization.
i agree with you because technology is a big factor in globalization for others to trade/share ideas.
Define "Globalization" How has modern technology contributed to globalization? What are some of its advantages? What are some of its dangerous side effects? Refer to the text when generating your response
it basiclly made the world intertwined they were sharing goods and basiclly networking information.steam boats and trains made it really easy to transport goods and peoples. the bad thing is that technoligical advences means more advances in warefare.
@Lauren-
I really like your definition of globalization. Adding on, I like how you mentioned the use of markets, and not solely communication and technology. Also, you made a good point about how the Great Depression created a ripple effect due to the interconnectedness of the world at the time of the economic crash.
Globilization is when people are sharing goods and ideas with each other. With telephones, email, and networking systems people from all over the world can talk to each other. Some advantages of globalization is that you get new ideas and products from other countries. Advancments these countries make can often help other countries improve on their technology or equipment. The dangerous side effects is that countries might want to use the technology for warfare. Also, with advances in weaponry more people will be killed. As in World War 2 the creation of the atomic bomb caused many people in Japan to be killed at once.
Technology has effected globalization in many ways. This idea of having everyone come together politcally, socially, economically etc has happened partially because of computers, TV, telephones. Computers can tell you what happened in Japan in minutes or less. Before we didn't have this luxury of knowing exactly when something has occurred. TV does this as well because news is broadcasted all over the world allowing many more poeple to be aware of problems, wars, and updates. Steam engines, cars, planes and other means of transportation around the world also have allowed globalization. They move goods, poeple etc. This brings our world a little closer. for us to so easily be able to mail a letter to Europe and so easily contact anyone around the world helps globalization.
Globalization is growth on a worlwide scale. techniologies have contributed to globalization by means of creating an easier lifestyle for everyone as a populace. It has its ups and downs. Advantages of globalization can be divided into goods and peoples being transported, the possibility of war decreases, media intertwines people via communication, cultural barriers are reduced, democratic form of government increases in popularity, nation states interdependance is in upheaval, developed countries can invest in occuring developing ones, flexibility of corporations handling across countries relations increase, and environmental protection in developed countries increase as well. Disadvatages can flunctuate between cheap labor in developing countries, increased chance of economic disruptions occuring in one natiuon affects others, control via media may limit cultural expressions, greater risk in health hazards due to disease, and spread of materialistic lifestyle.
Globalization is simply the increase of communication and interaction between countries. It is obvious how technology has been the driving force behind this: transportation and communication have advanced to the point that any goods can be shipped anywhere and global communication is instantaneous. The benefits are also obvious: more trade means more prosperity, and medical supllies as well as technology can be provided for impoversished nations, although there is not much will for this. The drawbacks are relatively insiginifcant in my opinion, but still present. Just as the Mongol empire spread the plague, our current world can spread new diseases like SARS and the avian flu globally in a matter of months or even weeks. Another drawback in some respects is the near impossibility of isolationism. The only nation that seems to be attempting this successfully is North Korea. Other nations such as Iran and China find themselves in the rather humorous position of trying to stop their own citizens from documenting current events on the interwebs. There is no question that globalization is the order of the day, and there is no sign of it stopping.
basicly it ment that the world was itntertwined.things like steam boats and trains were good things becuase they were transporting goods and peoples.what was bad is that with new technological advances comes new ways of warfare.
@Clint,
You make an excellent point when you say that globalization not only improved communication, but also transportation. Without the railroad and steamboats people would be limited to certain places and messages and ideas would not be able to travel effeciently (I don't think I spelled that right). Good ideas.
To Shane
I enjoyed how you referd to steamboats and other inventions that helped tthe transportation in goods and people as it associates with the topic of globalization. It is still unclear to me on your response for the disadvatageous leading towards warfare as it was pretty vague. But I agree that communications do in fact tie the world together.
Well, there would be a momentary economic penalty if China shut down, but the advantage of globalization is that they could be easily replaced. The labor market for any industry is practically unlimited because the entire world is involved, and resources can usually be found in more than one place on the earth, so there is a great deal of equality when it comes to trade relaltions.
@Shane:
Nice shane. way to forget to delete the question! :)
Anyways, you make a good point when you say that the world is intertwined. You also recognize the fact that these advances can be bad because they can improve war machines and easily cause more destruction. Good ideas!
@ Rachel good use of networking i like how you put weaponry into detail like the atomic bomb.
I tend to agree with the idea that cultural identity has little value. It seems to me that you cannot have national pride without believing your nation is inherently superior. I'm not talking about patriotism for a country that you believe supports your ideals or has accomplished great things, I'm talking about simpler thoughts like screaming USA over and over. This type of jingoism is detrimental to all types of intellectual thought, and the only thing globalization does is allow for comparison of ideals and methods.
To the Lord
We share mutual ideals on globalization. I would just like to add that I adore your references as they draw back to our previous lessons on mongol empires and plague as you compare them to recent disease SARS. Adding descriptions of other countries such as Korea, Iran, and China and how they are doing are adequately valid and I must say I approve.
@ Rachel good use of networking i like how you put weaponry into detail like the atomic bomb.
@ elisa i like the way you went back to political social an economic effects. and how information is braodcasted.
Shane, I agree when you say that globalization advanced warfare, but also being connected created even more of a chance of a war happening also because there is more communication and more arguing.
McKinley,
Your globalization definiton is very good. Simple and sweet. I also like how you mentioned globalization coming down to trade because, when I think about it, it really does! Trade doesn't only include goods, but also ideas and culture, which ultimately brings the world together. It's also true that countries will always try to preserve themselves and their economy, in any way, which sorta breaks globaliation. Like the example you had with Depression and the countries closing off from each other. Overall, very nice response!
Mariha, it is true that smaller countries will flourish under this, but the bad side to that is that the larger coutnries that are helping the smaller ones are losing money and resources.
Alex,
I really like how you mentioned technology is what drives globalization because that is really true. Without the machinary, such as the Internet and World Wide Web, we can reach other countries easily, thus bringing the world closer together. Also, with the trains and planes, we can visit our relatives who live on the other side of Earth! I also like how you put an example of train moving soldiers during WWI :)
Don't underestimate the power of nationalism. Yes, it can be used to spread violence and feed a lust for power, but it can also give inferior countries motivation to go towards more positive goals, such as Canadas dedication to peace and enviromentalism.
@Clint
I agree with your points on how globalization affects transprotation. The communication links are important, but what was truely revolutionary was the creation of faster ships, cargo planes and the like that really made trade a lot easier and linked hundreds of nations together.
@ Sean
I agree with your points on how globalization was affected by communication. Things like the telegraph or, more recently, the phone or E-mail enabled countries to stay in constant contact about worldwide matters.
Garrett,
Yeah I agree with that because if your self sufficient by yourself then there is no need to connect with another country. But if you aren't self sufficient then that's when globalizing comes into play. Your also right about how the League of Nations was really a waste of time because they rarely took the initiative.
Rachel,
What you said about networking and how it helps connect people is very true. Technology makes it much easier for people all around the world communicate. I never thought about how countries might want to use new technology for warfare. You are right, weapons like the atomic bomb make it much easier to kill many people at once.
James, I agree with you in the sense that globalization can be used to help inferior countries move towards their goals, but I also believe that that dosn't happen nearly as much as it does in helping countrues with their lust for power.
Elisa,
I completely agree with your post, especially your emphasis on technological advancement. The immediacy of information and travel of both goods and people is essential in connecting the world. Your Japan reference is very insightful and you can see how that would affect world politics and economics on a great scale. This allows every country to be involved in the policy and industry of every other. Without it, globalization is unprofitable and absolutely impossible.
@ McKinley
I agree with your post, especially the point you made about globalization coming down to trade. I overlooked the important role trade plays in globalization in my post, but you are completely right. Trade has been a catalyst for globalization. Without trade, there would be less of a need for a connection with the rest of the world.
oops, sorry bout th edouble post earlier, and i mispelled my name earlier, sorry...
Mariha, It is true that globalization can help smaller countries, but as I said earlier, it can help the bigger countries hurt the smaller ones to.
Globalization is when contries merge together throught technology. The reason that countries globalize is because they cant to grow economically or politically. Globalization can be bad because countries start to rely on each other to much and if there is an economic downfall, the countries that have ties with that country, they will also suffer in the economy. Globalization can also be good for countries because they will become more prosperous because they will get new technology and some countries like Japan they will get resources. When countries trade with one another, they will become richer
Garret I agree with your points on globalization and how it is good to certain countries. There is also nothing wrong with foreingers coming to work in your country because they will work harder and work for cheap and plus you are the one with the funny accent.
Globalization can be defined as the process of intertwining different countries with technology and trade. It allows the world to become a “smaller place”, for they are all interacting with one another. Technology has played a large role in globalization because it permitted people to travel farther distances in a shorter amount of time, as well as mass-produce goods. Airplanes, railroads, and cars are just a few examples of this. Communication was also made easier with the invention of the Internet, phones, and so on. A dangerous side effect of globalization is the risk of a falling economy. Because each country becomes dependent on one another and the goods each country produces, if the economy were to crash, inflation and depression could occur. Another negative aspect of globalization is the loss of cultures and native languages. When larger, more powerful countries assert their control over others, local cultures could be lost or replaced by those of the larger country. Also, globalization could create a larger gap between social classes. New technologies cost money, so while the rich are able to afford these and progress with the better quality or more advanced tools, the poor are not able to buy them, and the quality of their supplies go down.
Ross,
I agree with your points about becoming too dependent on other countries. If countries rely on others for the majority of their goods, they risk an economic downfall. Although I do agree with that, I think that countries globalize for more reasons than just their inability to grow economically and politically. I think that globalization was just inevitable anyways, and the benefits that each country received made it desirable.
Globalization is urbanizations including their social, cultural, and political aspects and the spread of these things throughout the world. Through this exchange there is a link between communications, travels, trade, etc which unites the world and provides for even more social development and relations. A dangerous side of globalization occurs when certain relations can be formed. These include alliances, debts, loans, war, etc. Each country or urbanization now relies on the other, which could both benefit or bring down the country. An example of these disadvantages are in the World Wars I and II where alliances formed, back fired, debts built up, and loans could not be repaid.
Tommy, I totally agree with all your points and obviously there are more downfalls than you mentioned to globalization. I like how you mentioned the introduction of new things from globalization. With each new advancement, mistake, and solution, we start the cycle again so globalization is ever growing.
Ajay, I thought it was interesting that you mentioned how countries feel robbed of their individuality with globalization. I agree and also think that nowadays, it is harder to come by a unique thing which differentiates a country. By this I mean stores, government, etc. Though there is obviously still diversity such as with monuments, traditions, etc.
