  1. Nationalism contributed to the causes of the two world wars because every nation had their own pride. With people willing to stand up for their nation and prove that their nation is great, countries began to develop armies and military. With this, citizens became involved in propoganda and emphasizing how great their country was which led to the hatred towards other nationa. After one nation went to war with another, all allies were in action which caused a world war and the assistance from citizens to the war furthered the wars and pride.

    • I agree that the citizens of each country had intense pride for the success of their countries, and I also agree that propoganda played a huge role in the inflation of nationalism. This is especially seen with Russians during WW1, as they portrayed the Germans negatively, which only propelled more nationalism through the people.

    • This is very true, but I think nationalism is what led to even earlier causes, such as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in WWI.

      • I agree with this. The nationalism present in each country meant that the citizens had great pride, which meant that countries worked hard to be the strongest through military power

    • I agree because each country wanted to one up its enemies so they had to show that they were the best with nationalism. With each country joining the war it was mostly for pride purposes. For example, in World War 1, Austria-Hungary wanted to show that they weren’t weak so they had to go into war with Serbia. Each country’s citizens wanted to help with the war effort to show their pride in their own country.

      • I agree that with nationalism came a sense of pride. It also pinned the countries against each other which resulted in violence. In addition during WW2 Hitler said it was because of nationalism that he was traveling to other countries but he was also gaining people for armies. Propaganda also fueled nationalism.

      • I dont belvie it has to due with pride to the country but instead the unification and belif that each country was better than the other, more aggorance than pride

    • I agree that armies and military began to grow because of nationalism. It provided soldiers with pride of contributing to the war and believed they would be hero’s when they were welcomed back.

    • I agree that nationalism contributed to the causes of the wars because of each nation’s pride. If one country is disrespected then hat nation is obligated to retaliate. This is the reason that both wars started.

    • I agree that the citizens sparked the use of propaganda. Form that also came more nationalism and more pride for the war as a movement which caused it to be seen as a good thing that people wanted to fight in rather than just another war.

    • I agree that nationalism gave a great sense of pride which led to people signing up to fight and it also made Germany want to fight to regain its losses after the Treaty of Versailles.

  2. Nationalism caused WW1 because after the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary went to Serbia out of pride and to show that they couldn’t just come in and kill people. That basically started the whole war in triggering alliances. In WW2, Geramany was very nationalistic in the fact that they wanted to show the rest of the world that they couldn’t be put down and that the treaty of Versailles wasn’t fair to the nationalistic country.

    • I agree that nationalism had a huge part in the war, but I believe that every nations nationalism had a part in the war. If they had just sat down and talked it out instead of posturing, then we may not have had war.

      • I agree with you. It wasn’t just Germany who was very nationalistic. All of the countries involved had extremely nationalistic view which caused the war.

    • I agree that the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand played a major role in supporting nationalism leading up to ww1

  3. In World War 2 Hitler used nationalism to gain support of the people. His main claim was the unite the German people under one nation. In The Great War Serbian nationalists were responsible for the assassination of Franz Ferdinad which would lead to the start of the great war

    • I agree with all components of your response. Additionally, the people of Austria-Hungary displayed nationalism in the chaos that spurred after the Archduke was assassinated.

    • In WWII Hitler used propaganda and nationalism to convince the German citizens that they were a superior race to everyone else. In WWI after the Archduke was killed Austri Hungary wanted to take Princip to show that you can’t just kill their leader.

      • I agree that using propaganda was used to fuel nationalism and also that Austria Hungary used nationalism to show there leaded could not be killed without consequences

      • I agree the fact that nationalism and propaganda was spread all over Germany and to its people during WW|| and hitlers rule.

    • I also can see how the Serbian nationalists were the cause of the first World War. Since nationalism allowed them to unite and assassinate the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand.

    • I agree that Hitler used nationalism and propaganda to convince his country that they are a superior race to everyone else. One thing I don’t understand is how nationalists killed the Archduke, I didn’t know it was a nationalist group

    • I agree. With all this nationalism in the countries, it lead to many people joining the war to show their nationalism.

  4. Nationalism played a huge role in both wars because it bright all countries together. Everyone’s strong pride for their land made them want to go out and fight. Also nationalism created a sense for people that they were better or more worthy than other countries. This in turn creates controversy as well because it will cause countries to fight because they believe they are better than everyone else. In ww1 it brought troops from all countries to want to fight. In ww2 Germany’s intense nationalist views were used as a disguise in order to start ww2. Where the rest of the world saw hitler trying to bring his people back together, they were really gearing up for another war.

    • I agree that nationalism was a huge contributor, and made people go out and fight. I also think it drove countries apart, rather than brought together, because citizens were so focused on their own nationalism and pride for their country that they were willing to go and fight without even knowing the reason. In WWI it was definitely expressed through bringing troops to fight along with the pride of Austria-Hungary specifically. And for WWII, Germany definitely took advantage of nationalism and used it as an excuse to start the war.

    • I agree, nationalism really brought some countries together and caused a belief system of superiority. I also believe that nationalism was a major cause in the alliance system. As you stated, it brought nations together which caused a string of alliances on two fronts and thus creating two separate alliances which would eventually go to war.

    • I agree with their pride getting in the way and causing them to fight with each other as well as them thinking they’re better than other countries because of their resources.

    • I agree with your response Jakob. Nationalism caused a great sense of pride in all of the powerful countries and they all believed that they were better than everybody else. Everybody was always ready to fight for their countries which allowed war to start much more rapidly than it would in other times.

    • I agree, without nationalism people wouldn’t have been so eager to fight a war. If it wasn’t for strong beliefs in nationalism both of the world wars could have been avoided.

    • Nationalism was an important factor, however the reason why it has became popular and important was due to the propaganda and belief that certain countries were superior to the rest and the other countries would be swept away. This is not pride from the people but the lack of knowledge of the situation

  5. Nationalism contributed to the first World War as Austria-Hungary initiated the declaration of war on Serbia as a result of their leader, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, being assassinated by the Serbian nationalist group, The Black Hand. Nationalism plays part in both parties— the nationalistic group killing Franz Ferdinand, and the rage of the people of Austria-Hungary after this killing. The second world war was caused by nationalism because Germany had been in a deep state of depression. German pride and rallying the German people to better Germany is what led to the second world war because individuals like Hitler who were furious about the outcome of the first war wanted to re-establish their position as a great power.

  6. Nationalism contributed in world war 1 because it lead people to believe that they would win, caused conflict, and was the reason why Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated. Nationalism contributed in World War 2 because nationalism was the motivation behind joining Hitler in the Nazi party as well as Hitler using propaganda to manipulate Germans in following his rules.

    • I agree that it played a big part in germany’s motivation to fight. They wanted to help their country rise up from its suffering after their defeat in WW1. Also, it made the other participants in the war want to destroy their enemies for wronging their countries.

  7. Natiolism play a role in the worlds wars as the people were able to contirube their lives to the war without reason, the soldiers were blindly following their countires motives as a result people died, In ww1 without proper education , the average soldier would join the war without knowing thr reason why his country is fighting. It causes ww1 due to the serbain natiolsim resulting in deaths of royal family. They beliveed that the austira has suprtessed them, so teh black hand killed for their country. Ww2 was caused by Germany natioslim. Hilter wanteed a german empire and most germans agreed. Withoud this aggoeance the wars could have been prevented

  8. Nationalism contributed to both world wars because nationalist weakens the Ottoman Empire which led to the assasination of archduke Ferdinand and that was a big direct cause of the word wars mostly WW1

    • I agree that nationalism contributed to the start of WW1 because the Serbian nationalist group The Black Hand caused the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This then led to the ultimatum and eventually Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia for their presumed lack of compliance.

  9. Nationalism contributed to the causes of both world wars because of the want to show that ones own country was the best. Nationalism was showed in the propaganda and caused more citizens to be involved with their country’s war effort. Nationalism was also on the battlefield. The soldiers fought until death even though they were going to lose. Because of nationalism more people became involved with the war and led to much intensity between opposing countries.

  10. Nationalism in a sense is a feeling of pride want desire for one’s own country. Every country in both wars had their own sense of nationalism which fueled the start up of WWI because both alliances were declaring war on each other because their sense of nationalism had gotten the better of them. the same with WWII. Germany took back its colonies because of their nationalism and other countries understood because they would do the same, until Germany had rebuilt its forces and took Poland, because they were ambitious and prideful.

    • Nationalism was one of the main causes for ww2 with Hitler going into other countries taking back land that was taken from Germany in ww1. Because he did this Germany invaded Poland to get more of its land back that was taken prompting the allies of Poland to declare war on Germany to protect their own country and Poland.

  11. Nationalism contributed to the two world wars because every country had a sense of pride, and wanted to fight for it. It caused men to enlist in the war and fueled propaganda. In WWI, Austria-Hungary expressed nationalism after their Archduke was assassinated. This led to their war with Serbia, and the rest of WWI. For WWII, Germany tried to take its colonies back, using nationalism as the excise. They later used these people to enlist as soldiers to fight World War II.

    • Nationalism gave people something to fight for. These patriotic displays from each power built tensions, especially between Germany and France in WWI. Germany felt it was a great nation that also deserved a navy and with that colonies. Great Britain disagreed because of their power over the seas. They each felt entitled to something that someone felt actually belonged to them, therefore causing an all out world war.

  12. Nationalism contributed to the world wars because citizens of some nations felt they were the best country and wanted to prove it, in other countries when a nation was attacked by another people were willing to fight to prove their loyalty to their nation, and lastly because people felt the sense of pride when their allies were attacked and everyone stepped in to defend said allies.

  13. Nationalism contributed to the causes of both world wars in Germany with the taking of the Rhineland and the Sudetenland. Germany, which was economically destroyed due to the Treaty of Versailles, was looking to take back what was theirs before WW1. The people rallied behind this cause for their country and supported anything that would help their country return to what it was before WW1. Nationalism is also seen in the USA after Pearl Harbor, as many Americans believed that their freedoms were at risk after the attack. The people were proud of their liberties, and when they came under fire, they would do anything to protect them.

    • I agree that because of the treaty of Versailles the German people wanted German to be the way it was before ww1 and the only way they thought that was possible was war.

      • I agree with you and that the treaty of Versailles was acting as a spark to the whole
        Nationalism in Germany.

    • I agree that nationalism helped cause both of the wars. I also agree that it started with Germany taking the Rhineland and the Sudetenland. Germany wanted their land back and wanted to return to their “former glory”.

    • I agree, without nationalism the citizens of different nations wouldn’t have been so confident in themselves and compelled to prove themselves in war.

    • I agree with you post, Harrison. Nationalism caused people to have pride in their countries and feel as if they could take down any of the other powers in the world. The example of Germany rallying against the Treaty of Versailles is a great example along with the USA after Pearl Harbor. The major powers believed that they were better than everybody else and this caused any sort of threat to cause immediate battle.

  14. In WWI Serbian nationalism led to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and Austrian-Hungarian nationalism led them to go to war against them over his death and to defend their honor as a country. Extreme nationalism was what got Hitler elected and then led him to wage war on other countries to regain formerly German land. Pride in their countries and their allegiances was what led other countries to join in the war effort.

    • I definitely can agree that the German nationalism and Austria-Hungary nationalism are the key reasons why both World Wars happened. As well as other factors such as, alliances and militarism.

  15. Nationalism contributed to both of the world wars because people of all countries want to fight for their country and defend it at all cost. This proved effective when Germany attacked Rhineland and Sudetenland because that’s when the people of Russia and the rest of the 5 main countries decided to hop in on the war. This then called out for massive world war and every country was wanting men to enlist to help fight their cause and because of nationalism, many men did and joined the military to go fight.

    • I agree with what you say because the nationalism did make them went to protect their nation, and prove to the other nations that their’s was the best.

    • I agree, due to their nationlism they wanted to protect their country at all cost; their pride by part of it as well.

  16. Nationalism was a contributing factor to the world wars because every nation was trying to prove that they were the best in the world. A example of this is the countries expanding their militaries to be the biggest and best in the world. It also made people want to defend their country at all cost to prove that their country was the best.

  17. During the 20th century nationalism played a key part in causing both World Wars because it united countries behind one common goal, to prove that their nation is superior than everyone else. The first World War was caused by nationalism because countries like Austria-Hungary wanted to prove to the world that they could defeat any enemy with the might of their forces. Which would eventually lead to 1933 when Hitler invoked extreme nationalism into the German people. Persuading them that their once great nation could be the best European power, if they rallied behind him.Pay way to the second world war.

    • I agree with both of these statements, especially with nationalism playing a huge role in WWI, where countries were eager to prove their military prowess.

  18. Nationalism contributed to both world wars because the major countries thought that they had better a better military and technology than the other powers. Also, all of the citizens thought that they were better than the other countries, and had a lot of pride in their country. That means that with the slightest provocation they would retaliate.

  19. Nationalism contributed to both of the world wars because it was able to cause major conflict between the countries. Also, many people thought that their country was better, or thought that they had more power since many had much pride in their own country. The nationalism that had occurred in the first world war was what led to the assassination of Archduke, which led Austria Hungary to war. And in the second world war Hitler was able to get elected because of the nationalism Germany had which eventually led them into war.

  20. Nationalism caused both world wars by each nation thinking themselves superior to the others. The Germans were really bad with this, leading to both WWI and WWII. They believed that they could rule over the world, that Germany was superior in culture and race. The other nations didn’t take well to this, they thought they were the best, so this lead to war basically.

  21. Nationalism contributed to the start of the two world wars because every nation had a lot of pride and when their power was questioned they were happy to start a war to show their strength. Nationalism also caused leaders like Hitler to come to power who preached the power and strength of their nations.

  22. Nationalism contributed to both World War 1 and World War 2 because nations at this time had extreme pride for their countries. People were ready and willing to fight for their country and gladly risked their lives for their countries as well. Everybody had confidence in their countries, such as Germany believing they could completely take over Europe. This sense of nationalism meant that at any threat, there were tons of soldiers and people ready to battle which contributed to both world wars.

    • I agree as Germany’s nationalist thoughts led them attacking Europe and starting WW1 which lead to the treaty of Versailles and then WW2

    • I agree with your comment because of how Germany had too much confidence in their country. Nationalism is a manipulative subject and Hitler used it to his advantage.

  23. Nationalism contributed to the causing or both world wars as it caused Germany to find the treaty of Versailles below them and led to Japan attacking China and eventually joining the Axis powers

  24. Nationalism played a very large part in causing World War II as it both brought countries together, as well as caused the hatred that sparked the war. When the Treaty of Versailles was signed and Germany was blamed, it causes great suffering. When Hitler ran for Chancellor, he promised to unite and save Germany. This strong sense of Nationalism led to people taking pride in their countries and wanting to fight to protect/avenge it.

    • I agree with your response. Nationalism can be used to unite countries but also make them weaker. Hitler used nationalism to his advantage in the beginning of World War 2. Hitler had too much confidence in his country.

  25. Nationalism caused widespread pride and proudness for one country. It gave an Idea of us against the world it also gave an idea of superiority. Nationalism caused World War One from the nationalist sentiment especially in the balkans area of Europe in which they where still controlled by Germans and Hungarians. World War Two was started from Nazi germany superiority complex of their country and uniting the German people and gaining living space for the German people which directly caused WW11 from Nazi invasion of Poland.

  26. Nationalism played a large part in causing the two world wars because each nation was very proud and discriminatory. This led to each country being very defensive and made them want to claim more territory and reclaim area lost in previous wars. This led to Germany’s invasion of Poland, which started World War II.

    • I agree, conflicts due to pride rose often as a result of nationalism and nations were often at odds. Nationalism did make countries defensive, especially the people, who were given propaganda against other countries

  27. Nationalism contributed to both world wars because it had an influence on killing Archduke Ferdinand which late led to the events leading up to World War 1. Nationalism causes conflict which can follow to death. Also nationalism was used as a tool by Hitler to distract them. After Germany’s loss, Hitler decided to have nationalism be the key component of his propaganda’s.

    • Nationalism was a great cause of World War one because of countries being greedy and not negotiating. Nationalism shows you are proud of your country and want it to be the best. A lot of causes all linked back to countries all wanted to be better than each other.

  28. In WWII Hitler used propaganda and nationalism to convince the German citizens that they were a superior race to everyone else. In WWI after the Archduke was killed Austri Hungary wanted to take Princip to show that you can’t just kill their leader.

  29. Most nations believed they were superior to their neighbors and rivals, each country was focused on getting ahead and staying ahead of each other. Leading nationalism to be one of the main leading causes of World War One.

    • I agree with you that nationalism gave the nations a sense of pride and empowerment. I do believe though that nationalism wasn’t really the cause of the competitiveness between nations and the races were mostly caused by industrialization.

  30. Nationalism contributed to the two wars becuase having there own sense of pride. The black hand was also part of the cause of WWl as they assassinated the archduke of Austria-Hungary. Because of there pride they decided to retaliate against them. Hitler also ralied the people of Germany also due to his pride.

  31. Nationalism contributed to the causes of the two world wars because in World War I, it lead people to go fight along with the people like of Austria-Hungary. In World War II, nationalism was used more so by Hitler to convince the Germans that they were superior to everyone else. This shows how nationalism was very significant in having everyone want to fight for their countries and contribute to their countries.

    • I agree because in Hitler rising up and raising the morale of his citizens, he caused them to take arms by making them believe they are surperior.

  32. Nationalism contributed to both world wars. This was because all countries want to protect their people and be the best they can be. People wanted to stand up and fight for their countries, and that is exactly what they did. Pride, propaganda, and contributing to the war effort pushed this forward.

  33. Nationalism played a major role in the cause of these two roles in which it came down to each country’s pride. In world war 1, Serbia did not want to stand down and submit to the austrians/hungarians. Thus, causing ww1. In ww2, Hitler had evoked the pride of his citizens to not be oppressed any longer from the treaty of versailles.

    • I agree, pride due to nationalism in Germany was important as it allowed Hitler and his party to rise but it was also important fueling other nations’ involvements into the world wars

  34. Nationalism contributed to the causes of the two world wars because of arising pride within the people toward their nations. armies and military began developing which were fueled by nations attempting to show off and prove they are the greatest. Propaganda arose which was troubling because it was against other nations often times. Overall nationalism contributed through pride. Many nations were able to fall into trying to be the greatest for example Germany and the rise of Hitler’s party.
