  1. I think that politicians should somewhat follow public opinion polling. Politicians should view the polls for their own state because that’s who they represent. Public polling can be very bias so politicians need to consider it with caution.

    • I agree that proper discretion is necessary for the following of public polls, because everyone has their own agenda and the politician needs to decipher what works best for their motives.

    • Politicians should follow what public opinion for the most part. They are supposed to represent what the people believe and want to see done and changed.

    • I also felt that polling can be very bias for a state and that politicians can’t always rely on what polls say. Not all ages vote so public opinion is biased in that sense that opinion is condensed to certain age groups.

      • I agree because many people pushing from voting and engaging in polls but it helps politicians figure out a way there going to go.

      • I agree with polling being biased because of the age restrictions which the politicians can’t always trust the polls

    • I also think they should somewhat follow it, however their political opinion should come from an abundance of experiences and past/current events not just the popular opinion.

    • I think it’s also beneficial for politicians to view the polls for the people they represent in order to upkeep their support from citizens, but I think one of the more important things you touched on was the possibility of biased polls and the need to take that into consideration and act accordingly.

      • I agree politicians should follow polls to understand what issues are important to the public; but also keep in mind that the polls will not be completely accurate due to biases and leading questions.

    • I agree that following the polls is helpful to the politician. They should still have their own opinion and have a good balance with their and the public opinion.

      • polls are great at looking at to help, but there must be much more that politicians should look into for developing their opinions. also they should look at a lot more then polls to gauge their public opinion.

      • I agree, Nia. A poll should not be a determining factor in being a politician. But, it does play a huge role in the public’s opinion on the candidate.

    • I agree politicians should be looking at what their people want. Whether it goes with their political views the candidates should consider the public’s opinion and incorporate how these opinions are still valued. The people want to hear their voices through their candidates.

      • It is a good point that politicians should listen to the people and try to represent what they want; however, public opinion polls do not always accurately reflect the views of a population.

    • I agree with that statement, and would like to further elaborate on how polling can be biased. Polling typically is administered through surveys, and the type of survey (self-taking surveys) can be biased. The way questions and answers are phrased can hold a significant amount of bias as well.

    • That’s a really good point. I feel as thought representatives jump to focus on what the party they are in would want, rather than the state they are supposedly representing.

    • Public polling can be very bias but so it all voting. We get bias opinions from anyone who decides to go out and vote. But I do see what you mean about how they should view it with caution

    • Don’t you think that taking the public opinion polls for the entire state is too much? It covers too large of a population so the representative would not be able to get a clear example. Most responses would be at best divided by party or split because of diversity. Possibly going county by county with party guidelines would be more effective.

  2. I believe that politicians should use polls as a guideline for what they should follow, but they shouldn’t follow polls to a tee because such an amalgamation of opinions can’t follow a clear motive that can actually be implemented by politicians.

    • I agree. Public polling does not always represent the population. The best way to represent their people is to conduct polls on their own and see what his/her people want. However, not everyone votes on polls so it may not accurately represent the population.

      • Most people do not answer poll, this will affect the full representation of the population or the people. Polls are still the best way of obtaining information, but the people and politicians have to pay attention to the source.

        • I agree polls are efficient way of obtaining information; however, I don’t think they are the best method. Polls can be bias and represent one side more than the other. Personally, there could be a mix of both polls and other information to ensure no bias.

        • I think you make a legitimate point in stating how not all people will partake in polls, which affects how accurate the results are. It’s important that politicians pay attention to this.

      • I think politicians should use polling as a sample to get an idea of what citizens of their state want. But ultimately they should make the decision and not fully use polling due to biases.

        • I agree, I think the use of polls is good to understand what the people want but there are other aspects the politician should look at when deciding views.

    • I agree with your opinion, because then they are represented as a partisan-like candidate, who mostly listens to the citizens without considering the actual issues at hand and the consequences that can go into play.

    • I agree. Politicians should be able to use the polls as a guide as what to incorporate into their agenda.

    • Politicians using polls as a guideline is a smart way for them to listen to what the public wants, but also act on a reasonable basis. Implementation upon politicians can be different then what the public wants.

    • I agree with your comment, because polls can give a certain advantage or disadvantage to particular topics, we shouldn’t follow what they say exactly, as is.

  3. I believe politicians should and shouldn’t follow public polls. Polls show the voice and thoughts of the people but at the same time some times opinions can be one sided.

    • I agree, having a one sided view will affect the needs of the people. It will represent the voice of the people, most of the time, but politicians need to see if they are credible.

    • Agreed. There are too many biased perspectives to consider. It is helpful, but not the absolute word of action.

    • I agree. Relying on polls can be both a gift and a curse. On one hand it helps the voice of the public, but on the other it can be misconstrued or corrupted to distort the views of the public in order to affect policy. The results of polls need to be taken with a grain of salt. If the government implemented a polling system with no risk of being corrupted the situation might change, but as of today there is still risk.

    • So should politicians completely disregard the polls that are one sided? If so, how are they to develop policy that benefits their party or their constituents? It’s a difficult subject because how does the politician navigate between partisan polls and diverse polls? Should they strictly follow party opinions or truly reflect equally representative opinions?

    • I agree with you that, despite their flaws, polls do reflect the voice and views of the people and so should definitely be taken into consideration, but while keeping in mind their limitations.

  4. Politicians should follow public opinion polling so people can know what their beliefs and stances are. People will be able to choice a better fit candidate if they follow their polls, but it could cause vast controversy.

    • I agree. If your local politician tends to go towards the popular opinion polls they will continue to be voted in ans the people will love them. But, their needs to be a division of power

  5. I think if public politicians followed public opinion polling, citizens would feel as though their voices and wants were better handled. The problem with public opinion polling though is that at times it can be incredibly vague, and it may not properly represent citizens actually wants. Especially when poll creates frame questions.

    • I agree that citizens would feel more listened to if they knew representatives were closely heeding their opinions, especially if politicians actively reach out to discuss things with community members.

    • I agree, there is no one clear desire from the public and as a result it makes it more difficult to rely on the polls.

    • I agree with this in almost every case other than the rare cases when the polls might show a particular favor that is not necessarily the best for the future of the people or the state of america

    • I can agree that public polling tells the public that politicians are listening to the people’s voices and I can also agree that it’s difficult to tell when polls have been properly administrated as well as properly created.

    • i agree… everything would be very vague and nothing would be able to get done. The citizens wouldn’t be equally represented and it wouldn’t help very much.

    • I also agree that the following of public opinion polls puts more importance and emphasis on the citizens. Public polls can definitely be vague and misleading at times which is why it is important for politicians to view as many different polls as possible.

    • I agree with your statement because public’s polls can be very vague and could lead to a misinterpretation of the data that it gives, but if the polls were used properly then it would give an accurate representation of what the public wants but at the same time everyone’s opinion is different and may variation

    • I agree. I do feel that public opinion polls can help people feel heard but can also be negative because the politicians may not be able to represent everyone

  6. I think that politicians should listen to some aspects of public opinion polling. I think that there are positives of polling in that it will allow them to know what people of their state wants. However they need to be wary of bias that can be caused by polling.

    • I agreed. If politicians would like a shot at winning they should listen to the opinions of the public! Having the citizens best interest should be all of their first choices. But yes, by doing polling bias may be involved and the need to distinguish between bias and unbias polls should be on top of their list as well.

  7. I think that politicians should take public polling with a grain of salt. Public polls could target only specific types of people and may be biased. I think that some polls are good to look at and are very informing

    • I agree. Public polling do not always represent the population of the United States. Most of the time, polls only target a specific group, which causes bias, which media reports on. That leads to false opinions and could influence the population.

    • I agree, bias could be a big factor in polling. It could create unequally represented polls that could skew the politicians opinion or how he should proceed.

    • I agree some polls are good and useful to look at because they provide information as to what the public wants and they give insights to their opinions but polls can also have many biases towards certain topics which could make them not very helpful

    • Polls are a great tool for looking at how the public view them. It is all about looking at the right polls and looking at poll aggregates. Polls when presented in a certain way can make any opinion look like the correct one.

    • I agree. Public polls can easily be biased and in many cases have been proven to be. There is a certain value in them, but it only extends as far as we can trust them. Fake polls can lead policy and policymakers the wrong direction.

  8. Politicians should somewhat follow public opinion polls because they are representative of what their constituents believe. However, sometimes they are faulty, and politicians should also do what they believe is right despite what their constituents may seem to believe.

  9. Yes they should, if politicians are able to follow the need of the people it will create a government that is representing the people. The positive will be that the people would be well represented, but not all poll are accurate. There is always some bias and also the politicians will have to look at news outlet and who is conducting the poll. While polling allows most to be represented, it can leave certain demographics out.

  10. Government officials have the duty and responsibility to respect and represent the views of the public. Therefore, they should honor the wants and needs of the people. However, a poll may not be grounds for such a decision. Polls can be inaccurate or imprecise. Representatives should instead rely on their political platform for their decisions, since people vote based on these platforms.

    • I agree, their platform is important because people voting is more important. Polls can be insightful but votes are determiners of reality. Some polls really are skewed or corrupted in order to try and change politicians minds. However, it is still important to view the insight of the polls.

    • I agree. Public polls can be used in unimportant ways, but if representatives use their political views to create polls then people will use these as advice on how to vote

    • I agree, it is the duty of government officials to respect and represent the views of their constituents. While polls will not be completely accurate they can give representatives an idea of the public opinion. It is in both the people’s interest and the government official’s best interest to look at public opinion as a factor in their decision making process, because their duty is to represent the views of the people.

  11. I believe politicians should use the polls as a guide as to what their state what’s or on how they as a whole are seen to the America public. At the same time politicians should not rely on the public opinion so much as it may be based off of facts or bias.

  12. I don’t think they should follow public opinion polls, however their opinions should be swayed and fluctuated by the current state of politics and the country as a whole. Public opinion polling is good because it allows for the people to give their voice and it is incredibly beneficial for doing studies and finding out political views on a nationwide scale. The only thing is that polls typically becomes conservatively swayed because people with access to polling usually have more income which usually means they are economically conservative.

  13. I think that politicians should follow public opinion polling because they are hired and put in position to be representatives so they should be listening to what the general public wants. They should listen to the public but also follow there own thoughts while indicating the public’s,

    • I agree public opinion is very important because it shows where the public stands. Either with you or not! Having the polls for public can show that the politician is concerned for the citizens and takes into regard the opinion of the public.

  14. I believe that politicians should and need to use polls to get the public’s opinion. Some polls may be biased so I wouldn’t follow all of them. Politicians should also do polls for their own state, so they can see how it would benefit their state as a whole.

    • I can agree with that but do you think that if a politician created their own poll, regarding the state they reside in, it will be honorably held? I feel as though it would face the same problems as locally held polls.

  15. I believe that politicians should and need to use polls to get the public’s opinion. Some polls may be biased so I wouldn’t follow all of them. Politicians should also do polls for their own state, so they can see how it would benefit their state as a whole.

  16. I feel that politicians should listen to public polling to get an idea of how to represent their state effectively but they should have e some digression when it comes to this and not just be mindless only listening to polls

  17. I believe that politicians should follow public opinion polling because it can allow everyone to have ideas and present those opinions everywhere. On the other hand, people to take advantage of these polls and survey aspects that are not extremely important and 100% need to be looked upon.

  18. Public opinion polling should be considered by public officials. Even though some may say that polling makes the officials consider the public opinion, the polling still lets them know what people think of how they’re doing their jobs—whether their comment is negative or positive. It also lets politicians know what citizen’s views are on certain subjects.

  19. it is essential for politicians to know the public opinion even though it might be slightly flawed. Polling is the best way for politicians to understand what we think and it is one of the best tools we have to communicate with politicians. polling isn’t completely accurate and this is something important to understand is that when you look at a single poll you must take it with a grain of salt but when you have many polls that express the same conclusion there is some merit behind that conclusion.

    • Definitely. Usually polling from ether Twitter or Facebook can be skewed, and emailed or mailed pamphlets can be used less or regarded as spam. Typically, a representative would have their own website or phone #/email linked on social media, so it is not like communicating with them is an obscure concept. But at least that would be the most accurate outlet of critiques and concerns rather than blind emotions or those crappy late night shows.

    • I agree in the idea that while flawed polls help politicians to get a representation of what people want

  20. Politicians should follow public opinion polling. Obviously they should stick to their personal partisan beliefs so they are not hypocrites but there should be a balance. The people’s voice is more important because that is what our country is made of. They must represent the public as best they can. They should follow the most reliable and largest polls to please the majority.

    • I agree on how you put that just if the public likes something doesn’t mean the politicians should follow it against their own personal beliefs. The peoples voice is important, Power To The People.

  21. Politicans should follow public opinion pollings because it allows them to listen to what the public wants. If they follow the public opinion pollings then they get insight on what the public wants and what the popular vote of the public is. This is a positive because then the people will actually have a hand in what politicians do

  22. Politicians should not closely follow public polling a due to the amount of ill administrated polling and the way the questions are asked. After our reading last night I do think that the public should consider polls as a loose leaf way of retaining information. However I do think the any part of public opinion is a considerable factor when it involves a politician

    • This is true, polls are not very well administered and therefore can be untruthful. Some even fraudulent polls so they could potentially skew the public opinion. However, i agree that public opinion is important an should be followed.

    • I like how you included that the information should be taken with a grain of salt. I also agree that politicians should take the polls into consideration.

    • i agree with you. the public’s assumption shouldn’t always be listened, as some give out inaccurate leading information and politicians are the ones much more educated to make the decision thereafter.

  23. I believe politicians should somewhat follow polling because it gives an accurate insight on what the people they represent want. Though they should not be influenced completely by these polls because they still should stick to what they believe in.

    • I agree with you because these representatives are voted in based on their opinions so in some right they should follow that

      • I agree somewhat; on one hand the politicians should represent the opinion. However they are the experts and far more educated than the general public so they should have some say in the decision.

  24. Politicians shouldn’t follow public opinion polling because not every person could make it to a poll or they just wouldn’t take it. If they were to follow it, it wouldn’t be an equal representation of the people. They could make a guideline or use these polls to create certain areas or their agendas but they shouldn’t be what they focus on the most. These polls could show what people would want if we were honest but people tend to take advantage of things so they shouldn’t be what they focus on the most.

  25. Politicians at the very least consider public opinion polling within their debates and/or arguments. The country runs on a representative democracy so it is plausible that politics would take into consideration the public that they are representing. However, we know from history that that is not always the case, and more often than not politics have their own agenda. Public opinion polls can also be biased due to the type of survey being taken, and/or biased phrasing within the questions. These polls are part of the politics and will continue to be, but they are not as commended as they may been considered to be when first created.

  26. Politicians should listen to the popular opinions and take them into consideration. We are a democracy and hold ourselves on a pedestal for being a country of the people. The positive results of listeming to the popular vote the people will side with you. They feel as if you see and hear their voices as you should. But, the people do not always do all of their research when giving their opinions on political issues. If politicians were to base their actions only on popular polls they will be misleaded some if not a good portion of the time.

    • I agree, Politicians should follow public opinion because that is what they are elected to do. The public elected them to represent their voice. They need to make sure that they echo that voice to other governmental people and agencies. If they do not follow that opinion they would never get reelected again.

    • I totally agree with you, the opinions of the people are extremely important considering that everyone has different views on politics, but also sometimes people will not take these polls seriously so, if politicians were to listen to the people and analyze what they are saying, then turn it into something valuable, then their polls will be more effective

  27. I think that politicians should listen to the view of there people due to the fact that it might give them a better view on what’s important to others. However I feel that politicians should do what they think is right for there people without insight from other so that we know where interest are.

    • I also think that. Politicians have a different perspective that needs to be considered, but the people should be heard.

    • I agree with you on politicians should make decision on how they feel and want while also considering the public opinion polls.

    • I agree, politicians should not completely rely on polls. Politicians should be confident In there messages and not be too concerned with what people think unless there message is the opposite of what people want.

  28. I believe politicians should listen to the public polls of the state they represent because those are the people they represent as a politician. Ultimately they are the voice of the people in laws they are making and the voice of the people are in the polls. The opinions should be taken loosely as they have probably not taken classes or researched so much into politics. Sometimes the people in charge know more and whats best for the country.

    • I agree that they should pay attention to public polls. However I think that they should look at the background of all the different polls and make sure that the data is reliable and also to make sure they understand the context of the poll.

  29. I think that politicians should keep up with public opinion, but not base all their decisions on it. Politicians are supposed to represent the people, so they should be aware of what the opinion is in their area. However, there are different issues with polling such as leading questions, non-randomize samples and response bias. Because of this, pools are important to pay attention to but offices should do their own research in their own areas to make sure they get the best sample to best understand their constituents opinions.

  30. Politicans should be able to follow the poll with considerable caution that it can go multiple ways such as skewed results and many other comodiitiesbut right now each politicans should paying attention to the polls thier state is doing because thats who they are here to rep for in any seat of government

    • I agree with this. Polling information can so easily be tainted by misinformation. It’s important to be cautious but still take them into consideration

  31. While I believe that politicians should take these polls into account I dont think that they should strictly follow that as the polls have the ability to be unrepresentative of true public opinion. These polls can be misleading as they can have screwed poll groups

    • I completely agree. It is important for politicians to have an idea of their constituents opinions on current topics, so they can vote as a delegate. They should however, pay attention to the details of the polls, so they do not just believe a biased poll that could completely misrepresent their district or state.

  32. Yes, politicians should follow public opinion, within reason. Politicians are hired to be our representatives, so it makes sense that they should follow what the general public wants (for example, how they end up representing us in the election, as delegates). However, they shouldn’t completely bend their own beliefs just to placate people. Doing so makes them look wishy washy, and as if they aren’t well educated on the issues.

  33. I think that politicians should go by public polls because they are meant to represent the public and by following they would be doing so. Everything they do effect the the public so why wouldn’t they go by the polls?

  34. Public polls are the direct link to the House and a bit of the Senate given pressure. Though context can be iffy. For example, after 9/11, everyone wanted America to go to war. Now in 2019, that is still a situation that is mixed between ‘remove our soldiers from there’ and ‘let us protect the oil reserves’. Then there are situations where push came to shove. Recently, with honosexual marriage, that was activism led passively by polls and online media. Now these days is impeachment.Ether way, politicians should listen to public polls with the tools available to them, but remain in some fair levels of authority. It is “for the people”, not “for their party”.

  35. The government is supposed be made up of citizens and make legislation for the citizens, because of this it is vital that representatives and government officials listen to the opinions of the people. While polls can represent the views of the people government officials should verify the accuracy of the polls, and look at biases within the polls. Further, leading questions can decrease the reliability of polls. Politicians must be careful to check the accuracy of polls when researching the public opinion.

    • I agree with the government listening to the opinions of the people and that the accuracy of the polls do not perform well. I do think that the people’s opinion would improve the image of the politicians.

  36. Polititions should only follow national polls made by reliable pollers. They should ignore polls made by the media, specifically politically biased news sources. Polls can be beneficial for knowing what the people think of course, but if they are local polls then they are not held to the standard of national polls, making them “bad” polls.

    • I agree with the fact that reliable pollers should be the ones that are specifically followed. However, you say that local polls are made out to be “bad” polls, how exactly? What is the standard held for national polls?

    • Reliable pollens should be mandatory if they are being used by politicians. However, if there is a general restriction on the polls with the assumption that the audience is being honest. Then, the polls aren’t too far from being votes.

    • I agree. The media can be really bias or one sided which can affect someones
political views just so the media can get more supporters

  37. Politicians should follow public opinion polling because it gives them a better image of what the population wants. It can also help the image of the position because it gives the impression that they are listening to the people. Downsides to this is that the public can have a vague outcome of data. There needs to be more variables into the question instead of just population count.

    • I agree with you that it is good political strategy for politicians to follow polls in order to seem like there are listening to the people, but there are definitely downsides to following polls as they do not truly demonstrate a clear opinion of the majority of people, and can definitely be vague or inaccurate.

    • I agree that public opinion is not full proof, especially when it comes to polls. There should be a method to validate pollers on their credibility to see if they are reliable.

  38. Public opinion should always be taken into consideration. Reason being that elected officials should represent the people/place/district, etc. they represent. Then of course there is the fact that if you go against public opinion you may not be reelected. The only problem is that sometimes public opinion is split pretty down the middle, which in that case the politician really would have to make a decision on their own.

    • I have to say I disagree. Although the government is supposed representative, the public itself isn’t always reliable. In an ideal world, everyone would base their politics stance based on research and their own individual ethics, but that’s not always the case.

  39. Politicians should not follow public opinion rulings because they are not a completely reliable source. Many voters do not vote in favor of their actual determination in their final votes and the accessibility of the polls allows unqualifying opinions into the mix. Although, there can be a general idea of the country’s stance politicians can utilize it partially but not as a widely accredited source.

    • I thought your opinion on polling was very interesting. I also believe that an issue that comes from polling would be that politicians don’t necessarily listen to what people want, but they rather utilize the opinions of the pubic to formulate what they present to people in order to get more votes.

  40. I believe politicians should follow public opinion polls to an extent. It’s important for the people who are supposed to be representing the people to be knowledgeable and thoughtful of the opinion of the people. However, polling is not always accurate, and does not always encompass the majority of the people they are representing. In order to be a good politician, you need to have a good balance of consideration for those you represent, and a sound mind.

  41. Yes I think the politician should follow the politician polls, because a positive thing that could come out of it is being accurate. Which politicians should always be in most cases. Plus polls can be helpful and informative.

  42. Yes I think the politician should follow the politician polls, because a positive thing that could come out of it is being accurate. Which politicians should always be in most cases. Plus polls can be helpful and very informative

    • Politicians should not fully follow public polls because they can be bias based on the source but it does get a good idea on people views and what certain groups of people think which I think they can use it to there advantage

  43. This is a difficult question to answer because public opinion polling lacks significant credibility and is prone to be extremely one-sided. Take for example the poll from the reading we read about the welfare system. About 75% of people supported “assistance for the poor”, but only 25% of people supported a “federally funded welfare program”. This leads the representative to question — do the citizens want to assist the poor or not? It seems as if they do, but do not wish for anything to be taken out of their pockets; how is this possible?

With this being said, public opinion polls can still provide politicians an idea of what their constituents want. The approach when interpreting these though cannot be as one-sided and single narrative controlling as they usually are. Because politicians are elected by their constituents, it is their obligation to follow the public opinion of the nation. In extreme cases it must follow the discretion of the individual politician but most times I find that the politician and the constituent can reach an agreement.

    • I agree public opinion polling can be uncredible and extremely one-sided. However, polls can be used as an insight into helping the politicians.

  44. Politicians should abide by polls to a pure extent. The polls can come out to be beneficial and positive. So, they can aid to bring focus to many issues. However the poll, the numbers, and the politicians view should be taken into account to side in credibility.

    • i agree with you. the polls do give an idea for what the people want and considerably focus on the big issues coming forwardly from the public’s voice themselves.

  45. I think to some extent they should take in consideration public opinion polls. Positives to public opinion polls is it gives the politicians a good idea of what the public thinks. Negatives is it can be biased.

    • I completely agree with you on the positive aspect of it because it is really important to hear from those who it will really will be affected by it.

  46. Politicians should follow public opinion polling; however, they should not fully rely on it. Public opinion polling can be extremely bias at times and completely uncredible. Politicians could also use this as an insight into understanding the publics’ desires.

    • I agree with the idea that public opinion can be biased. I would go as far to say that the public can be unreliable at times, because many Americans tend to be misinformed, or even bandwagoning sometimes. But that’s not to say the public can’t be trusted at all, we just all need to realize that the public opinion has its faults.

  47. I believe that the most reputable polls should definitely be taken into consideration by politicians, as they are one of the only ways to gauge public opinion, whether they are 100% accurately reflective of the population or not. But because no poll can truly be completely reflective of the will of the people, and as that is not something that should be used for all policy decisions anyway, politicians definitely should not follow polls blindly and should take many other factors into account.

    • I think It is great that you bring up that nothing is 100 percent effective. One must consider that we as people actually live in reality, an imperfect world. There is no perfect politician. It would be lovely if there was a person out there who could perfectly balance all factors but such is simply impossible. We must take the tools most effective for making decisions and use them to our advantage. As you said, polls are one of the only tools for surveying opinion. They need to be considered, no matter what, to some degree.

    • I like how you take the credibility of certain polls into consideration, but also still acknowledge that even those polls will never be completely accurate in regards to representing the diversity of the public opinion.

  48. Politicians should aim to complete that which they initially promised to do when being elected. They voiced their opinions initially and people vote on them based around those opinions and their policy. The politicians already represent the people and would not be in office without them. They should do what is within their power to respect their duty to serve those people. Public opinion is part of that but not all of it. Polls not to mention do have issues associated with their reliability, especially when conducted improperly. A politician must factor these flaws, the public opinion they know, and the reasons they were already voted in all into consideration when making decisions. It is certainly not a simple calling.
